I know that we continue to be heartbroken by the senseless deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and too many of our people, not to mention our new reality dealing with COVID-19.
As Black women, our role in all of this can take a significant toll on our mental health, and right now, self-care is so important. Taking a few steps back from the chaos in the world and making intentional efforts to care for yourself is crucial to maintaining your mental health during this time. Here are some of my favorite self-care tips that have kept me from being overwhelmed and sad during these dark times.
Take 10-15 minutes a day to reflect and be grateful:
Instead of focusing on everything that is not going right in these moments, try starting a gratitude journal to focus on what is and has gone right. I set aside moments every day to be thankful for the things and people that bring me joy. This has done wonders for my mental health. Using this time to reflect on the things that brighten my day and memories that make me smile have made all the difference.
Start a garden:
I’ve started a garden! The weather is warming up, and I figured why not make some use of the sun. Mine is outside, but there are options for indoor gardens too. Either way, you’ll have to figure out what lighting, soil, and space your desired crops will require. Alternatively, if harvestable aren’t your thing, you can always plant flowers instead! Spa at home:
Part of self-care is being kind to your body. Although we physically cannot make it to the spa, we can still bring the spa in our homes. I usually pick a time when things have settled down in my house (often when my husband and daughter are out of my hair), so I can wind down without interruption. I like to run myself a bath or prepare a steamy shower with my favorite body washes. I light some candles with relaxing scents to set the mood all around the bathroom. During my spa day, I like to go all out and take the extra time to exfoliate my body (give our Vita C Citus Coconut Body Polish a try!). I finish your spa day with your skincare routine with my Vita C collection. Taking intentional moments for yourself during these times has helped me get through it.
