More than skin deep: A Good Brother is the first to educate Black People about their skin.
When hearing about the history of medicine, rarely do we learn about Black trailblazers. This is especially true in dermatology, which continues to be one of the least diverse specialties in medicine. Despite the lack of diversity, Dr. Theodore Lawlese shaped how we understand and treat skin disorders, particularly in skin of color. He was the first widely known Black dermatologist in the United States who overcame prejudice and used his platform not only to advance medical science the organ that defines race but also to develop and give back to the community.
Dr. Lawless started his medical practice in a predominantly Black neighborhood on Chicago's South Side. The practice became one of the largest and most successful dermatology clinics in the city. People of all ethnic, racial, and economic backgrounds flocked to his office in search of cures and treatments for rare and baffling skin disorders. He worked tirelessly to find a cure for leprosy and made several strides in the treatment of both leprosy and syphilis.
However, there is still a lack of awareness about Black Skincare, especially when it comes to sunscreen use. The myth that Black people do not need to use sunscreen every day comes from the Black community itself.
THE ISSUE:
Your melanin will not protect you from Melanoma Cancer.
Contrary to popular belief, people of color should use an SPF every day! Our minds tend to automatically associate it with caucasian skin who spend their days at the beach in the sun or frequent tanning salons. We fail to remember that people of color can be susceptible to the harsh UV rays. BLACK PEOPLE are 1.5 times more likely to die from melanoma than Caucasians.
